(Oakland, IA) — Two of the top runners in high school football will take the field tonight in Oakland as BGM visits Riverside, coverage on KSOM.
The Bulldogs Jaxon Gordon leads all of Iowa in rushing with 1,961 yards — the Senior currently ranks #21 all time in Iowa history in rushing with 5,675 yards. The Bears have Senior Beau Burns who is third in the state in rushing with 1,745. Riverside Head Coach Darrell Frain says Burns can make plays and not just on the ground
Burns has thrown for over a thousand yards with 10 TD and 5 interceptions. Landon Hassett is like Cole Jeppesen — he gets a lot of yards after the catch and has 40 receptions for 637 yards and 3 TD. BGM has a balanced tackle chart on defense — DE Landon Cooling leads the way with 29.5 tackles but over half are for a loss 16.5. Frain is impressed with linebackers Nathan Findlay, Zach Clayton and Jacksyn Bullers
While Burns is the flashy quarterback, the Bulldogs Landyn Schoenrock is not. The senior has 262 yards on the ground and 746 in the air but only has 3 interceptions. Frain just needs him to keep the turnovers to a minimum
Frain says both teams are very similar — last year Riverside beat Lynnville Sully from the same area in a close finish and this one could come down to the wire as well
BGM won their first two games of the season but then lost back to back games against Madrid and Lynnville Sully. Since then they have won 4 in a row. Bears Head Coach Jerod Burns says they played some young players early on and they have gotten better
Jerod Burns is the father and coach of Beau Burns and the coach says that Beau has gotten tougher in the run game
Burns knows that Riverside is going to give the ball to Gordon around 35 times in this game and he hopes his defense will be awake after a long bus ride to bring him down
Burns agrees with Frain that this is a game that is evenly matched
BGM is 6-2, Riverside is 6-2, coverage on KSOM. Scouting Report at 5; In the Huddle at 5:15, Pre Game 6:30, Kickoff 7 pm.
