(Area) Iowa has set a new state record for Blue Catfish caught on the Iowa side of the Missouri River.
According to John Lorenzen, a Fisheries Biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, appearing on the DNR report on KSOM on Saturday morning, Nebraska angler George Thompson landed a massive 105-pound Blue Catfish, surpassing the previous state record by four pounds, which had been in place since 2004.
Lorenzen noted that Thompson is an experienced Blue Catfish angler. After hooking the fish, it took him 35 minutes to reel it in, during which the massive fish reportedly pulled the boat from one side of the river to the other three times.
Lorenzen emphasized that the Missouri River is an exceptional catfishing destination, located less than an hour away. He said, “If you’re interested in trying your luck at catching sizable fish, it’s definitely worth a visit.”
As a footnote, the record-setting fish was released back into the water for someone else to catch in the future.
