(Underwood, IA) –Number five Treynor will visit #6 Underwood on Friday night and the winner will have the upper hand in Class 1A, District 8. The Eagles already have a win over Tri Center — Treynor and the Trojans will tangle next week with Shenandoah, Red Oak, and Missouri Valley also in the hunt.
Treynor is coming off a 49-0 win over the Mustangs. Shenandoah was limited to just 2 yards of rushing and the Cardinals also had 5 QB sacks — Jude Thiel who was linebacker last season and now plays nose guard had 2 sacks; Will Sadr and Dane Guttau each had 1.5 TFL but Cardinals Head Coach Jeff Casey it started with stopping the run
Treynor will need their defense playing at a level this week because Underwood leads all Class 1A teams in total yardage. Garrett Luett has thrown for 932 yards, 11 TD and 1 INT and also leads the team in rushing with 365 yards and 3 TD. Casey says Luett is as savy as it comes
On defense, Underwood does not have one dominant guy — Ryker Adair has 17.5 tackles, Kyle Sub 16.5, Grady Joens 15.5, David Foote 13.5, Charlie Myers 12.0, and Jerry Brunow leads with 5.5 TFLs. Casey says that the Eagle D resembles their defense
Underwood is coming off a 64-33 win over Tri Center — Luett threw for 316 and 4 TD plus ran for 151 and 2 more scores. Maybe the most impressive thing about Luett’s game is he spread the wealth — 7 different receivers caught balls, the most by any one was 4 and three different guys caught TDs. Eagles Head Coach Nate Mechaelsen says that just proves Luett’s experience
Treynor has an explosive offense led by QB Ethan Hill and RB Jett Sornson — Hill has 639 yards passing with 7 TD and 3 INT and Sornson has run for 500 yards and 7 TD. Jude Mieska has 15 catches for 214 yards and 3 TD. Mechaelsen says they have all the ingredients for a good football team
Last year, Treynor won in the regular season 24-23 but Underwood won in the playoffs 21-20. Mechaelsen says there is a lot of familiarity between the two teams
Treynor is 3-1, Underwood is 3-1
