(Red Oak) Jan Norris of West Township, appearing before the Montgomery Board of Supervisors on Tuesday morning, spoke about two events scheduled for next month regarding the Summit Carbon Pipeline.
Norris stated that in 2024, the Iowa Utilities Commission issued Summit a conditional permit for the original petition, referred to now as Phase 1. The Permit was appealed in the District Court by several parties.
Norris also reported on the two counties in Iowa that are preparing a case for the US Supreme Court. The case being filed by Story and Shelby Counties involves the proposed Summit Carbon Pipeline. They say they are being blocked from regulating land use, including aspects such as the proximity of the pipeline to homes and businesses. A federal appeals court sided with the government. The counties are hoping the US Supreme Court will restore their authority.
Additionally, Norris informed the board that an event, scheduled to take place in a couple of weeks, involving Republican legislators leading the fight against eminent domain, will be held. She says the kick-off is at 3:00 p.m. on October 5, outside of Harlan.
The proposed Summit Carbon Pipeline is planned to run just under 20 miles through Montgomery County, Iowa. This pipeline is part of a larger project designed to capture and transport carbon dioxide (CO₂) from ethanol plants for underground storage in a geologic formation. The pipeline is part of an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by providing a way to store CO₂ permanently.
