(Lewis) The fall color season is right around the corner, and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources encourages residents interested in when and where the peak of the fall color season is to sign up for the Iowa DNR Fall Color Report.
John Lorenzen from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says go to the DNR website and navigate to the fall color report page.
You will be asked to enter your email address, and when reports start to come in, that information will be emailed directly to you. Lorenzen says, for example, last year he pulled up a portion of last year’s report that came out on October 28, 2024.
Lorenzen says trees are most vibrant in years where there was adequate moisture during the growing season, followed by a dry autumn with sunny and cool days, but not freezing. He says too much rain during the fall can dilute leaf pigments, and on the opposite spectrum, drought-stressed trees can also have less vibrancy.
