(Atlantic) The Atlantic Trojans close out their non-district football schedule Friday night with a road trip to Storm Lake. Atlantic, sitting at 1-2, has faced a challenging slate of Class 4A opponents, including Glenwood and Denison-Schleswig. Three-A Des Moines Christian, and will now meet 4A Storm Lake, also 1-2. Glenwood and Des Moines Christian remain unbeaten at 3-0.
Atlantic Head Football Coach Joe Brummer says his team has held its own, given the level of competition. He noted that turnovers against Glenwood and a few key plays versus Des Moines Christian shifted the momentum and ultimately impacted the Trojans’ chances.
The Trojans face a Storm Lake squad that likes to throw the football. The Tornadoes have a talented quarterback in Cameron Boyd. The 6’2, 180-pound senior QB is 42/79 throwing the football, for 582 yards, and eight touchdowns. Storm Lake has rushed for 270 yards, averaging 4-0 yards per carry.
Boyd’s main target has been David Williams, who has 18 catches for 348 yards and three touchdowns. Rylan Richardson has snagged 13 catches for 131 yards and three touchdowns. Coach Brummer says both are threats at wide receiver, each bringing different aspects to the game.
Coach Brummer says the Tornadoes have been tough against the run. Brummer says teams are throwing different defenses against the Trojans’ run-heavy attack. Atlantic has accumulated 332 rushing yards and 182 passing yards through the first three weeks. Ethan McNeal and Gavin McLaren have rushed for 215 and 105 yards, respectively.
