(Des Moines) Des Moines Christian is off to its best start since Matt Daniels became head coach four years ago. The Lyons, who finished 4-5 in each of their first three seasons, have opened this year with wins over two quality opponents. They beat Van Meter 29-21 in week one and defeated Roland-Story 28-7 last week. Daniels says the team is excited about the strong start and credits an emphasis on elevating play on both offense and defense.
Quarterback Max Town has been a key factor in the Lions’ offensive success. The senior has completed 60.6 percent of his passes for 203 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. Coach Daniels praised his quarterback, calling him an important leader for the team.
On the ground, Davis Tokeim leads the rushing attack with 36 carries for 233 yards and a touchdown, averaging 6.5 yards per carry. Town has also added 110 rushing yards. Daniels credits the offensive line for opening holes and says their ground game makes the Lions “dangerous in space.”
Coach Daniels says they are excited about the opportunity to play Atlantic. Daniels says they are a school with a lot of football success.
Coach Daniels points out that it’s his squad’s first opportunity to jump into Class 3A competition. The Lions moved up a class following last spring’s redistricting process.
Des Moines-Christian is in Class 3A District #5 with Williamsburg, Winterset, Saydel, Knoxville, and Nevada.
The game kicks off at 7:00 p.m. We will have the broadcast on KS 95.7 F.M., and live-streamed on westerniowatoday.com TV and YouTube.
