(Avoca, IA) — Avoca and Oakland are only separated by 13.4 miles and every year the two towns get ready for an annual tradition — the AHSTW Riverside football game. They play tonight with coverage on KSOM and Western Iowa Today TV.
Riverside is coming off a 44-32 win over Mount Ayr and it was a career day for Senior Running Back Jaxon Gordon — 38 carries for 422 yards and 5 TD including a 96 yarder. Not only is it a school record but it ranks among the top 20 rushing performances in Iowa 11 man history. Bulldogs Head Coach Darrell Frain says the game plan was not to rely on Gordon so much against the Raiders
Gordon has now rushed for a career 4,275 yards and needs just 725 more to get into the 5,000 yard club which has only 37 members in Iowa 11 man history. Frain says everything he has done has been quite an achievement
Frain says that it every yard that Gordon gets tonight will be earned because the AHSTW defense can play all over the field
Riverside’s strength becomes AHSTW’s problem. The Vikings are coming off an impressive win themselves 52-13 against Red Oak. Head Coach Davis Pattee says Gordon is not just hot right now, he’s steaming
The Vikings had a couple of great performances last week — Senior RB Drew Lee had 9 carries for 161 yards and 3 TD and Senior Gatlin Gettler had 8 carries for 49 yards and a TD, also caught a 51 yard TD pass, and led the defense with 10 tackles all of them solo. Pattee says he has the ability to affect any game
AHSTW has dominated this rivalry in recent years, winning 9 of the last 10 meetings. Pattee says emotions have to be checked
Riverside is 1-1, AHSTW is 1-1, game time tonight is at 7 pm, Scouting Report at 5; In the Huddle at 5:15, Pre Game at 6:30 on KSOM and Western Iowa Today TV.
