(Iowa City, IA) — The Iowa Hawkeyes came out of last week’s football game against Iowa St. with more than a loss — Iowa also lost starting Tight End Addison Ostrenga for the season with an Achilles injury. Next on the depth chart is Junior Zach Ortwerth but Head Coach Kirk Ferentz says other guys will be used including Senior Hayden Large and Redshirt Freshman D.J. Vonnahme from Keumper Catholic in Carroll. Ferentz talked at length about Vonnahme in his weekly press conference
Ostrenga’s injury is another setback in the receiving corps — Reece Vander Zee continues to be out as well. That cannot help the passing game that is still a work in progress but Ferentz says there were some good signs of QB Mark Gronowski developing confidence against Iowa St.
This week’s opponent is UMass who is 0-2 — the Minutemen lost to Temple 42-10 and last week fell to an FCS unranked team Bryant 27-26. UMass has a new Head Coach in Joe Harasymiak and Ferentz says the program has so many new players they have almost started from scratch
Iowa is 1-1, UMass 0-2, kickoff at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday is 6:30 pm and will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
