(Ames, IA) — For the 72 time, Iowa and Iowa St. will meet on the football field for the Cy Hawk trophy, coverage on KSOM.
Every game seems to be a close game — at least in recent years — the last five games have been decided by an average of 4 points. Also, the road team has won the last five games including Iowa St. winning in Kinnick 20-19 last year. With this year’s game at Jack Trice, Cyclones Head Coach Matt Campbell says that its one of the unique things about this rivalry
Iowa has been known as Tight End University but Iowa St. has some pretty good tight ends this year with Ben Brahmer and Gabe Burkle leading the way. Campbell says tight end is the toughest position to play because you have to be a receiver and blocker and his guys have shown their versatility
This is Campbell’s 10th meeting against Kirk Ferentz and the Hawkeyes and Iowa St. has just two wins in that time. Campbell says he learned quickly that this rivalry means a lot
The game is getting national attention this week — it is the feature game on Fox with their Big Noon Kickoff show broadcasting from Ames and Campbell says that reflects well on both teams
Last week, Iowa beat Albany 34-7 but the Hawkeyes still had their same old troubles throwing the football despite a new quarterback in Mark Gronowski but Campbell is not buying it — he says Gronowski should still be considered a dangerous threat
Iowa St. lost Jaylin Noel and Jayden Higgins to the NFL but the Cyclones passing game has not missed a beat, at least that’s according to Iowa Head Coach Kirk Ferentz who also says it starts with Rocco
The last time that the Cy Hawk trophy was on the line and Iowa St. was ranked and Iowa was not was back in 1978 when the 20th ranked Cyclones beat the Hawkeyes 30-0.
