(Coon Rapids, IA) — The CAM Cougars and the Coon Rapids-Bayard Crusaders both gave it their all on a brisk September night with CAM edging out the Crusaders 46-40.
The Cougars were the first on the board with quarterback Zach Kauffman throwing to Brentyn Hoover for a 20-yard passing touchdown in the first two minutes of the match-up. After a quick 3-and-out for the Crusaders, junior Kayden Winther rushed into the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown followed by a successful two-point conversion. Coon Rapids-Bayard answered with a long run from Caden Oswald for their first touchdown of the game with three minutes left in the first quarter. The Crusaders would then tie it up at 14 in the second quarter with a rushing touchdown from Ethan Bauer followed by two-points. CAM veteran Collin Bower answered with two receiving touchdowns of his own, both spanning over half the field in length and one being a one-handed snag with less than 30 seconds left in the half. Here’s Bower on what gave the Cougars the edge on the road against the Crusaders:
CAM and Coon Rapids-Bayard went back and forth in the second half with Crusaders running back Ethan Bauer rushing for three touchdowns in just the third quarter, all of which were answered by CAM with another receiving touchdown from Bower and two rushing touchdowns by Winther. Here is Winther’s thoughts on how CAM played in the match-up:
The Crusaders were down by 12 at the beginning of the fourth and scored on a 25-yard keeper by quarterback Caden Oswald to put the game within one score. As time dwindled to the last few minutes of the game, the Coon Rapids-Bayard defense forced a CAM punt and were put on the Cougars 12-yard line with just over two minutes left to score. An incomplete pass on fourth down forced a turnover on downs and allowed the Cougars to kneel the ball to victory. Zach Kauffmann gets his first win at the starting quarterback spot for the Cougars, he threw for 164 yards on eight completions. Here’s the sophomore’s thoughts on his first win:
CAM is now 1-1 on the season and travel to Bedford to take on a tough opponent in the Bulldogs next week. Coon Rapids-Bayard are also 1-1 after their win against Siouxland Christian last week and head to Griswold in week 3.
