(Atlantic) The Atlantic City Council discussed and came to a consensus to fill the vacant at-large seat following the honorable resignation of longtime city councilman Gerald Brink. Atlantic Mayor Grace Garrett paid tribute to Gerald’s years of service to the community at Wednesday’s City Council meeting.
Mayor Garrett went on to say Gerald’s commitment and dedication to the position of public servant have been evident in how seriously he took this role.
The mayor stated Gerald will be missed more than she can express, and if you see him out in the community, please thank him for his years of service.
On August 28, Atlantic City Administrator John Lund issued a press release announcing the resignation of Longtime Atlantic City Councilman Gerald Brink due to health reasons.
According to the Iowa League of Cities, it is now too close to the November 2025 general election to hold a special election. That leaves the city with one option—appointing a caretaker to serve until voters elect a new Councilmember this fall.
Atlantic Mayor Grace Garrett addressed the city council regarding the process of filling the vacant at-large seat.
According to the law, the city has 60 days to fill the vacancy from the date of resignation, which is September 1.
By law, the city must first publish a public notice in the local newspaper for a period of at least four days and no more than 20 days before taking action. The notice will inform residents that the Council intends to fill the vacancy by appointment.
Once the notice is posted, residents may submit letters of interest to City Hall for consideration. The Council will then hold public interviews with each applicant, followed by a public vote. When one candidate receives a majority vote, they will be appointed to the seat. Voters will ultimately decide who serves a full term in the At-Large seat during the general election on November 4, 2025.
The next regular meeting of the Atlantic City Council is scheduled for September 24 at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.
