(Atlantic, IA) — The Atlantic cross country teams opened their season this past Saturday at Glenwood and they are back on the track tonight. On the girls side, the Trojans ran away with a top five finish, placing 4th. Harlan won the team competition with 50 points while Lewis Central was 2nd with 67 and Glenwood was 3rd with 77. Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason believes his team is closing the gap on some of the best teams in the Hawkeye Ten
Katrina Williams finished 8th individually (20:24.17) for Atlantic; Kaitlyn Hickman (16th at 21:07.35) and Gabrielle Engler (18th at 21:31.98) both were in the top 20. Bella Brock was 33rd (23:09.87), Ximena Mendez Cordero 35th (23:27.69) and Alika Anderson 39th (23:36.01). Vargason says his team is at a better place than it was last year
On the boys side, Lewis Central got by Red Oak 70 to 78 with Kuemper Catholic in 3rd with 88 points. Atlantic finished 7th with 163. Mason Betts had the top finish for the Trojans in 15th place (17:08.97) and Vargason says the competition was at a high level
Thomas Engler was 32nd (18:33.57); Kouper Kinney 35th (18:48.15); and Anthony Akers 37th (18:51.40).
Overall, Vargason says the Glenwood is a good starting point but there is still work yet to be done and he will be looking for improvement tonight at DCG
Also competing at Dallas Center Grimes are AC/GC, Carlisle, Indianola and Van Meter.
