(Atlantic) The Cass County Master Gardeners will hold their annual Fall Plant Sale on Saturday, September 13, at the Cass County Community Center in Atlantic. The sale begins at 8 a.m. in the front parking lot.
A variety of divided perennials, such as daylilies, peonies, phlox, and hostas, will be available for fall planting, along with gently used garden décor, pots, books, and tools. Shoppers are encouraged to arrive early, as popular plants often sell out before 10 a.m.
Kate Olson, Cass County Extension Director, said many perennials—such as daylilies, peonies, phlox, bleeding heart, coneflowers, iris, and hosta—can be divided and transplanted in early fall. Dividing when plants aren’t flowering directs energy to roots and foliage, helping them overwinter and return strong in spring. Cooler weather reduces stress on both plants and gardeners, and fall transplants generally need less water. Plant as early as possible before the ground freezes, water until freeze-up, and consider adding mulch for moisture control and root protection.
