(Avoca) Regional Water Rural Water Association announced Friday that it has lowered its water conservation advisory from “Level Red” to “Level Yellow,” thanks to the continued efforts of its customers and member communities.
General Manager Tom Kallman said the downgrade comes as water levels have improved in both the wellfield and storage towers served by the Avoca Treatment Plant Distribution System.
“We want to thank all of our association members across our district who have done such a great job in conserving water throughout these last several weeks,” Kallman said. “We aren’t out of the woods yet, but we are moving in the right direction. We just don’t want to go back into Red or a Boil Advisory.”
The Level Red alert had been in effect since June 14, following a system-wide pressure loss caused by excessive water use. The advisory covers Regional Water customers and members in Shelby, Audubon, Cass, Harrison, and northern Pottawattamie counties, including the communities of Avoca, Portsmouth, Westphalia, Kirkman, Tennant, Panama, Earling, Persia, Exira, and Brayton.
Under the current Level Yellow advisory, residents and businesses are still required to follow conservation measures. These include:
-No watering or irrigating established lawns.
-Car washing only at commercial car washes, limited to 8 a.m.–8 p.m.
-No filling of private swimming pools or wading pools.
-No use of water to clean streets, driveways, or sidewalks.
-Large-volume users such as industries, hotels, restaurants, and livestock operations are asked to scale back where possible.
-Schools may use water for essential needs such as food preparation, hygiene, and showers for athletes, but are encouraged to reduce usage when possible.
Regional Water urges customers to continue their conservation efforts to help stabilize the system.
