(Dublin, Ireland) — Kansas St. Head Coach Chris Klieman wants a do over. The Wildcats missed on a 4th down conversion in the 4th quarter and Iowa St. made their key 4th down conversion to beat K-State 24-21 in Farmageddon played in Dublin, Ireland.
With just over 8 minutes to go in the 4th quarter, Kansas St. faced a 4th down and 1 at their own 30 yard line down 17-14. Klieman rolled the dice and went for it but Avery Johnson was stopped cold by Jamison Patton. After a lengthy review, Johnson was just short of the line to gain. Iowa St. had a short field and after a short Carson Hansen run, Rocco Becht found TE Ben Brahmer for a 21 yard gain down to the 7 yard line. Two plays later, Becht ran off right tackle and scooted into the end zone for a touchdown and the Cyclones had a two score lead.
The Wildcats answered quickly as Johnson hit Jerand Brandley on a 65 yard TD pass to get K-State back in the game and cut the lead to 24-21.
Iowa St. got the ball back with 6:37 left and they would not allow the Wildcat offense back on the field. On 3rd and 1 from the KSU 40, Becht hit Gabe Burkle on a 17 yard pass. With 2:32 left on 3rd and 10, Becht scrambled up the middle for a 7 yard run to the KSU 16. Head Coach Matt Campbell could have tried a 34 yard field goal but instead he went for the first down and Becht threw a screen pass to Hansen who rumbled down to the one yard line. Originally it was ruled a touchdown but was overturned. It did not matter, ISU ran out the clock with three kneels to end the game.
Becht was 14-28 passing for 183 yards and 2 TD plus had 18 yards rushing and another score. Hansen had 16 carries for 71 yards. Brett Eskidsen had 3 catches for 46 yards and a TD. Dominic Overby had 2 catches for 29 yards and a TD.
Johnson was 21-30 passing for Kansas St. for 273 yards and 2 TD plus had 21 yards rushing and another score.
Campbell earned his 100th career victory. Next up for Iowa St., they host South Dakota on Saturday, August 30, 2:30 pm kickoff, coverage on KSOM with the Cyclones Pre Game at 12:30.
