(Creston) Creston Police are investigating a Swatting call that occurred on August 16. Swatting is a type of criminal harassment in which someone tricks emergency services—often by deceiving a dispatcher—into sending police or other first responders to another person’s location. This is done by falsely reporting a serious emergency, such as a bomb threat, active shooter, domestic violence, hostage situation, or even a fabricated mental health crisis, for example, claiming someone is suicidal, homicidal, and armed.
On August 16, at around 11:43 p.m., it was reported to the Creston Police Department by Jackson Elkhorn that he had shot his mother in the face with a revolver several times after they had been in a fight, and was planning on shooting law enforcement when they arrived, because he had nothing to live for.
Creston Police Officers and deputies from the Union County Sheriff’s Office and Adams County Sheriff’s Office assisted in blocking off the area of 500 West Prairie Street. One of the Officers at the scene knew the resident at the address, and several attempts to contact them were unsuccessful.
As Officers approached the residence, a male stepped out of the front door and was given commands by officers, which he followed. The situation was explained to him and the other resident of the home, and it was confirmed that everyone at the residence was unharmed, and he had not called 9-1-1.
The incident is currently under investigation.
