(Harlan) Iowa requires all children attending licensed childcare centers, as well as elementary, middle, and high schools, including those who are home-schooled, to receive certain immunizations.
Paula Becker, Mrytue Medical Public Health Nurse, says the required vaccines are broken down by age group. For example, ages 4-6 required vaccines are Chicken Pox (varicella vaccine), the DTaP vaccine, MMR, and Polio. Becker says for ages 7-12, the necessary vaccines are the meningococcal vaccine and a booster of TDaP. For individuals aged 16-18 years, the required vaccinations are a second meningococcal vaccine.
Students planning to attend college or other postsecondary programs should check their institution for specific vaccination requirements. CDC also recommends additional vaccines based on the child’s age and health status.
Documentation of a valid certificate of Immunization Exemption (Religious or Medical) or a Provisional Certificate of immunization may be submitted in place of a Certificate of Immunization.
Requirements for valid exemptions may be found in Iowa Code 139.8 and Iowa Administrative Code 641-7.
