(Atlantic) Major construction is now underway on the Atlantic Downtown Street Improvement Project, with heavy equipment arriving and milling work beginning on Sixth Street on Wednesday morning. Project engineer Dave Sturm, of Snyder and Associates, said crews are also tackling a portion of Fifth Street, with both areas expected to be milled by the end of the day.
“The plan is to move south to north along Chestnut Street,” Sturm explained. “They’ll mill two blocks at a time, clean them up, reopen them to traffic, and then move on to the next section.”
Milling work is expected to wrap up in about two weeks, after which crews will begin the asphalt overlay. Sturm noted that the paving schedule will depend heavily on the weather, but the goal is to complete the asphalt work by early September.
“When it’s all done, downtown will have a whole new look,” Sturm said. “Right now, the streets are full of potholes that city crews have been patching. With fresh asphalt, new paint, and smooth surfaces, the area will look sharp and be a real improvement for the community.”
