(Pierre, S.D.) Two Iowa teens reeled in a world-class performance at the Junior World Bass Fishing Championship on Lake Oahe in South Dakota, earning the title of Runner-Up World Champions and $1,000 college scholarship vouchers each.
Walter Louk of Jefferson and Leon Polley of Harlan secured their spot in the elite tournament by placing second in the Iowa State Championship at Lake Okoboji in April. Competing against top junior anglers from around the globe, the pair showcased skill and consistency on the massive 370,000-acre reservoir.
Guided by boat captain Ben McCord, Louk and Polley finished Day 1 in sixth place with 11 lbs 3 oz of smallmouth bass. On Day 2—known as Cut Day—they weighed in 9 lbs 9 oz, advancing to the finals with a two-day total of 20 lbs 12 oz. With weights reset for the last round, they landed 11 lbs 10 oz to claim second place overall.
The finish reflects the team’s talent and the growing strength of Iowa’s youth fishing programs. The annual event awards thousands in scholarships, underscoring its commitment to fostering both the sport and education for young anglers.
