(Des Moines) On Friday, Grant Petty of the Atlantic FFA earned top honors by exhibiting the FFA Grand Champion Market Hog at the Iowa State Fair. His Champion Gilt weighed in at 290 pounds. Grant, the son of Darrin and Melanie Petty, will auction his award-winning hog during the prestigious Sale of Champions on Saturday, August 19, at 2:00 p.m. This event showcases the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion animals from each species selected during the Fair’s highly competitive livestock show—one of the largest in the world. During the prestigious Iowa State Fair Sale of Champions, 16 4-H and FFA exhibitors have the opportunity to sell their champion livestock, supported by hometown backing. The 16 participants look for sponsors, whether it be from private businesses, or individuals, and the money raised goes toward the starting bid at the sale, and 20-percent of the money raised also goes towards IFAA scholarships.
Grant says he has learned a lot from showing pigs at the Cass County and Iowa State Fair. He admits he has had a lot of help along the way, and he wants to pass that experience along to the younger exhibitors.
Grant appreciates any financial support he can get from local businesses, and individuals. Donations can be made at IFAA.org, at the top is the sale of champions tab, and select the exhibitor you wish to donate too. For example Grants profile will appear. Donors can fill out the donation form on the page and submit it, or send a privately, or online.
Established in 1988, the IFAA’s mission is to recognize the thousands of 4-H and FFA members who complete agricultural-related projects and pursue careers in agriculture. An important way to support and retain Iowa’s future ag leaders is by providing financial support to those young people interested in ag careers. Each year, IFAA provides merit-based financial awards to hundreds of participating students who demonstrate a commitment to continuing their study of agriculture within Iowa.
