(Underwood, IA) — There was no state title for Underwood Baseball this season but getting to state for the third year in a row is a pretty good consolation award. The Eagles finished 25-3 overall and lost to Unity Christian in the 2A semifinals. Garrett Luett will be a first team All State selection when the Coaches release their teams this week — Luett hit .603, 6, 25 and pitching had a perfect 11-0 record with 1 Save and a 0.81 ERA with 128 strikeouts. Head Coach Andy Vanfossan says the team achieved a lot this year
Luett will be back next season before going to the University of Iowa but how far the Eagles go in 2026 will depend on the development of their freshmen. Hudson Ross, Maddox Mechaelsen, Blake Brensel and Gavin Miles all played in basically every game this season. Pitching wise, Brensel had a 0.84 ERA; Ross was at 0.91 and Ryan Fletcher was at 1.91 but they will have to face tougher competition and Vanfossan says the key to Underwood’s success could be the pitching depth behind Luett
Underwood will have plenty of other talent coming back — Junior Ryker Adair hit .333, 2, 21 and Junior Connor Brummett hit .267, 0, 9; Sophomore Tayden Hull played defensively in the outfield and pinch ran. With Luett returning as well, Underwood will be considered one of the 2A favorites along with defending champion Pleasantville and Vanfossan says he will have his team ready
Underwood loses four seniors — CF Easton Robertson, 2B Nick Hackett, Lucas Bose, and Manny Rodgers — Vanfossan says they won 100 games and lost only 13 in their years with the Eagles.
