(Des Moines) Iowans can save some money this weekend as the state’s annual Sales Tax Holiday returns, from 12:01 a.m. Friday, August 1, through midnight Saturday, August 2, select clothing and footwear items priced under $100 will be exempt from sales tax.
The Iowa Department of Revenue says the holiday happens each year on the first Friday and Saturday of August. It’s important to note that the tax-free period does not extend into Sunday, so shoppers will need to complete their purchases by Saturday night.
Qualifying tax-free items include most articles of clothing and standard footwear, defined as “any article of wearing apparel and typical footwear intended to be worn on or about the human body.” Examples include sneakers, diapers, and work uniforms.
A complete list of eligible and ineligible items is available on the Iowa Department of Revenue’s official website.
All businesses that are open on Friday and Saturday are required to participate. The exemption applies to each individual, eligible item priced under $100, meaning you’ll receive the exemption even if the transaction’s total exceeds $100.
