(Atlantic) — The Iowa High School Athletic Union is shaking up the fall sports calendar this year by moving girls’ tennis from the spring to the fall to ease scheduling congestion.
Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott says the team starts practice on Monday, August 4..
Coach McDermott says the team will practice at 6:30 a.m. to allow for work and family activities.
McDermott says the potential return of eleven seniors could lead the team.
Coach McDermott says that along with the large group of returning seniors, he welcomes back volunteer assistant coach James Northwich and new assistant coach Molly O’Hara. McDermott says the focus early in the season will be on working on the fundamentals.
Time is tight as the Trojans prepare for a busy schedule. Just four days after their first practice, they’ll travel to Kuemper for a double-dual against Lewis Central and the Knights on August 8.
From there, the Trojans host Clarinda on August 11, St. Albert on August 15, travel to Denison on August 19, and return home to face Creston on August 26 and Glenwood on August 28. The Trojan Tournament is set for September 3, followed by a home match with Red Oak on September 8.
The Hawkeye Ten Conference Tournament will be held on September 11, and Atlantic wraps up its regular season at home against Southwest Valley on September 15.
Postseason play begins on September 17.
