(Red Oak) Four children living with special needs were presented with their very own custom adaptive bikes during a presentation at the YMCA in Red Oak Monday. The bikes allow them to gain strength and coordination and ride a bike just like every other kid.
The adaptive bike presentation was made possible through Variety – the Children’s Charity of Iowa and its impactful Mobility Program. The program is designed to help children with special needs gain strength, coordination, independence, and confidence through mobility equipment such as adaptive bicycles, gait trainers, standers, and specialized strollers.
Each year, Variety provides funding for more than 100 pieces of adaptive equipment to children and families across Iowa. Because these items are often not covered by insurance and can be prohibitively expensive, the program partners with physical therapists across the state to identify children who will benefit most from the specialized equipment.
