(Des Moines) – The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for much of the region, including parts of northwest, west central, and southwest Iowa, from noon to 8 p.m. CDT on Sunday. Residents across affected areas — are urged to prepare for dangerously high temperatures and oppressive humidity.
Forecasters say heat index values could reach up to 110 degrees, creating hazardous conditions that can significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. The west central and southwest Iowa counties under this watch include, Monona, Harrison, Pottawattamie, Mills, Montgomery, Page, Fremont, and Shelby. The rest of southwest, central, north central, south central, and southeast Iowa is under a Heat Advisory.
“This level of heat and humidity can be dangerous and even life-threatening if precautions aren’t taken,” the National Weather Service warned.
Health officials are encouraging people to drink plenty of water, remain in air-conditioned spaces when possible, and avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours. The public is also urged to check on elderly neighbors, young children, and individuals with chronic medical conditions.
Officials advise the following precautions:

Postpone outdoor activities or reschedule for early morning or evening hours

Never leave children or pets in vehicles, even for a short time
Car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in minutes, and heat stroke can occur quickly in extreme conditions. Symptoms of heat-related illness include dizziness, confusion, nausea, and rapid pulse. Heat stroke is a medical emergency — call 911 immediately if you suspect someone is suffering from it.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas for anyone working outdoors. Employers and workers are advised to watch for signs of heat stress and take immediate action when symptoms appear.
With the hottest part of summer peaking, local officials urge residents to remain alert and safe.
