(Carroll, IA) — Never before had Gavin Miles hit a home run in his varsity baseball career but the Freshman came through in the clutch for Underwood in a 3-0 win over Cascade in the first round of the Class 2A state tournament.
With the game a scoreless tie going into the bottom of the 4th, the Eagles did not have a base hit against Cougars starter Jackson Green. With one out, Cascade decided to walk Garrett Luett intentionally. Ryker Adair followed with a base hit that rolled through the hole into left. That set the stage for Miles who got behind 0-2. After ball one, Miles got the pitch he wanted and he drilled it over the left field wall for a 3 run home run and Underwood led 3-0.
That was more than enough for Luett who pitched a perfect first two innings. Brody Otting reached on an error leading off the 3rd but he was thrown out trying to steal. Nathan Schockemoehl got a one out single in the 4th but Luett got a ground out and strike out. Green got a 1 out single in the 5th but Luett got back to back strikeouts. Mick Huffman got a one out infield single in the 6th but Luett got two ground outs in a row.
In the top of the 7th, Luett got two straight fly outs and a grounder that Nick Hackett dealt with in short order to end the game.
It only took 1 hour and 15 minutes for Luett to throw a 3 hit shutout and the Eagles advanced to the 2A semifinals.
