#8 Hillcrest Academy 3, #1 Remsen St. Mary’s 1
The Ravens jumped on the Hawks in the top of the first when Rowan Miller lead off the ball game with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch with two outs. Hillcrest got two unearned runs in the top of the third on a single, error, hit by pitch and two fielder’s choices. Hillcrest starter Seth Ours did not allow a hit until the bottom of the 4th as the Hawks got a run on a sacrifice fly. Ours did give up a double and a walk with 2 outs in the 6th but got a pop out to end the threat — Ours allowed 1 ER on 3 hits, walked one and struck out 3. Phoenix Anderson pitched the 7th for the save and Hillcrest Academy (18-7) will go to the semifinals. The school formerly known as Iowa Mennonite won the 2007 state title. Remsen St. Mary’s finishes their season at 23-2.
#4 Martensdale St. Mary’s 2, #5 Kee, Lansing 0
Travis White and Taylon Squire combined on a 3 hit shutout to move the Blue Devils in the 1A semifinals. White allowed only three hits, did not walk anybody and struck out 8 in his 6 innings of work while Squire did not allow a hit in his one inning. With a scoreless game going to the bottom of the 6th, Colton Wright got a leadoff single and moved to 2nd base on a wild pitch. Travis White hit a RBI triple to center and eventually his courtesy runner scored on a RBI double from Jack Gavin. MSM is now 31-5 and will face Hillcrest Academy in the 1A Semifinals Wednesday morning at 11 am; Kee’s season ends at 32-11.
#7 East Buchanan 12, #2 Lynnville Sully 1 (6)
There will not be a repeat champion in Class 1A as the Buccaneers rolled past the Hawks. Keenan Pals went 3-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Brady Hogan went 2-4 with a double, 2 RBI and a run scored. Will Hansen pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed 1 ER on 5 hits, did not walk anybody and struck out 6. East Buchanan is now 18-9 while Lynnville Sully finishes their season at 24-3.
#3 Saint Ansgar 3, #6 Logan Magnolia 1
It was the first state tournament appearance for the Panthers but the Saints end their season. Logan Magnolia scored in the top of first on a Cale Cunard RBI double. Saint Ansgar tied it in the bottom of the third on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded. The Saints scored twice in the bottom of the 4th on a RBI grounder and RBI single to take a 3-1 lead. The Panthers got a chance to strike back in the top of the 6th — Kaleb Kuhl got a leadoff walk and Brodie Davis singled but Cunard hit into a double play and Drake Geith struck out to end the threat. Kuhl pitched 5 innings and allowed 3 runs, 1 earned on 5 hits, walked 2 and struck out 4; at the plate Kuhl was 2-2 with a triple and a run. Logan Magnolia finishes their season at 21-6 while Saint Ansgar is 22-7 and will play East Buchanan in the 1A Semifinals Wednesday at 7 pm.
Class 3A @ Lewis & Clark Park in Sioux City
#1 Dubuque Wahlert 3, #8 Boone 1
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 4th when the Golden Eagles scored all three of their runs on a squeeze bunt, RBI single, and a throwing error. Will Pierro for Wahlert pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed one earned run on four hits, walked one and struck out 8. Brandon Cummer pitched the last 2 1/3 innings and did not allow a hit for the save. Will Specht and Cummer at the top of the line up each went 2-4. Wahlert (37-6) moves to the semifinals on Wednesday while the Toreadors finish their season 23-10.
#5 Saydel 6, #4 Davenport Assumption, 4
The Eagles scored 4 runs in the top of the 2nd inning and held on for a two run win. Turner Bennett had the big hit for Saydel on a 2 run single with the bases loaded. James Tounsley pitched 6 innings and allowed 4 runs, 3 earned on 8 hits, 0 walks and struck out 3 on 87 pitches. Saydel is now 29-7 and will face Wahlert in the 3A semifinals. The Knights end their season at 27-12.
#2 Pella 12, #7 Sgt. Bluff Luton 5
The Warriors led but the Dutch responded with 4 runs in the bottom of the 3rd. SB-L responded with 4 runs in the top of the 4th to retake a 5-4 lead but Pella scored 8 unanswered runs to win it. Isiah Kettler hit a 3 run HR in the 4th inning. Luke Cowman also drove in 3 runs. Hayes Lauterbach pitched 3 innings of relief and only allowed 1 hit, walked 1 and struck out 2 to get the win. The Dutch are now 28-6 and advance to the 3A Semifinals Wednesday at 7:30 pm. Sgt. Bluff Luton finishes their season at 30-14.
#3 Bishop Heelan 3, #6 Carlisle 2
The Crusaders walk it off in the bottom of the 7th to beat the Wildcats. Ethan Erickson drove in the winning run with a RBI base hit to right center and Austin Larsen scored all the way from first base for the game winning run. Larsen ran through the coaches stop sign at third and beat the throw home. Erickson hit a 2 run HR earlier and drove in all three runs for Heelan and also got the win, pitching the last two innings and did not allow baserunner. Heelan improves to 30-10 and will face Pella in the 3A Semifinals. Carlisle finishes their season at 24-12.
