(Underwood, IA) — Two Western Iowa Conference rivals will meet tonight as AHSTW visits Underwood in the first round of the Class 2A Softball regional playoffs, coverage on KSOM.
The Lady Vikes are 5-15 and while Sienna Christian has seen the majority of starts, its not a guarantee that she will start against the Eagles. Christian has a 4.32 ERA in her 8 starts and 14 appearances while Halle Goodman has a 3.60 ERA and Loralei Wahling is coming off an injury with a 5.12 earned run average. Head Coach Katie Pace could use one, two, or all three of them
Whoever pitches will face a scrappy Underwood team led by Mary Stephens who is hitting .519 with 16 RBI and 48 stolen bases. Underwood has 140 stolen bases on the season so Pace’s defense has to be ready
Underwood is 8-21 on the season and even with Stephens incredible numbers at the top of the line-up, the Eagles are only hitting .245 as a team but Head Coach Jeff Martinez says it was way lower at the start of the season
Underwood started the season rotating two 8th graders at pitcher but Senior Alissa Fischer started to learn the craft and has emerged as the ace with a 5-7 record and 4.60 ERA in her 13 starts and 17 appearances. She will face a young Lady Vikes line up led by Christian who is hitting .452. The teams split their regular season meetings with AHSTW winning 8-4 and Underwood winning 7-3 with the road team winning each time. Martinez says the two teams are evenly matched
AHSTW visits Underwood in a Class 2A, Region 6 first round match up, coverage on KSOM.
