(Harlan, IA) — It had been a rough going for the Harlan softball team who had lost 18 of their first 19 games but the ship has been patched up somewhat and the Cyclones have won three of their last four. Head Coach Brett Croghan says the pitching and hitting have both improved — for the pitching he says their three hurlers have done a better job of pitching to contact — not trying to throw the perfect pitch and letting the defense make plays. Harlan has used three different pitchers — Juniors Lauren Schmitz and Rebekah Christensen and Sophomore Camryn Goshorn
As for the hitting, Croghan says he has tried a more simple approach, emphasizing putting the ball in play. Sophomore Taylor Heese is the leading hitter at .338 and 3 HR and 18 RBI but Croghan likes the improvement up and down the line up
The future is bright for Harlan — there is not a senior starter on this team and only one full time starter that is a Junior and that is Schmitz. Croghan has a huge sophomore class and says this year has been a learning experience
Harlan is 4-19 overall and visits Red Oak for a doubleheader tonight, they visit Atlantic in the first round of the playoffs next Thursday, July 10.
