(Des Moines) The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for the entire state of Iowa, in effect from Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening, as a powerful heat wave moves into the region.
Temperatures are expected to soar, with heat index values potentially reaching between 105 and 110 degrees at times. The dangerously hot and humid conditions could significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
The extreme heat will begin to build across the state on Friday and is forecast to intensify through the weekend. Forecasters warn that the sweltering conditions may persist into early next week, with little overnight relief.
Officials urge Iowans to take precautions, especially those working outdoors, the elderly, young children, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day, and check on vulnerable neighbors.
