(Corning, IA) — Southwest Valley Baseball is on the road tonight visiting Nodaway Valley in a Pride of Iowa contest, coverage on KSOM.
One of the top players for the Timberwolves is Junior Gavin Wetzel who is a pitcher, catcher and shortstop. As a hitter, Wetzel is batting .476 with 10 walks and has not struck out all season. He won’t be able to pitch tonight because he threw 71 pitches in Friday’s loss to Lenox 18-15 so he’ll be in the field someplace. So far he has excelled no matter where he has played — he’s only committed two errors all season — Wetzel says the situation in the game dictates where he is playing
On the mound, Wetzel has improved steadily each and every season. As a freshman, he never started a game but in 11 relief appearances had a 8.30 ERA. His sophomore season, he made 2 starts, 10 overall appearances and the ERA fell to 4.14. This season in his 6 games and 4 starts, Wetzel is 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA
Wetzel is busy every single sports season — he plays football, wrestling, track but his favorite is baseball. Wetzel says he has a younger brother Griffin who is an 8th grader and is on the baseball team and his younger sister plays in various sports. He says he has a very athletic minded family
Southwest Valley currently has one conference win going into tonight’s game with the Wolverines but Wetzel thinks there is plenty of time to make some noise in the Pride of Iowa
For Nodaway Valley, they have lost 4 of their last 5 including a 13-2 defeat to Southeast Warren on Friday. The Wolverines are led offensively by Freshman Titan Foster who is hitting .529 and Senior Paul Berg is batting .438.
Southwest Valley is 4-6, Nodaway Valley 3-7, game time tonight is 7 pm, coverage on KSOM.
