(Avoca, IA) — Its a Western Iowa Conference showdown in softball tonight as AHSTW visits Riverside, coverage on KSOM. The Lady Vikes have a young team with only two seniors — one is Loralei Wahling who pitches and plays left field.
Wahling will not be pitching tonight — last Thursday, a liner was hit up the middle and deflected off her hand breaking a finger. She is expecting to hit and the Lady Vikes will need her — the Senior is batting .357 — she says she is trying to stay relaxed at the plate and that has improved her confidence. Overall, the team has been working hard at improving their hitting
Wahling is the only senior who has been on the team for all four years so she has taken a leadership role and trying to help the young players come along. Three freshmen — Clara Pace, Kennedy Wyman, and Reese Knop have been in slumps but Wahling says they have the ability to hit better
The other senior on the team is Sienna Christian who did not play with the Vikes last season but has always played club softball — she has been the team’s best pitcher and hitter so far and Wahling says they work well together
The Western Iowa Conference has some talented softball teams and if the younger players can come around Wahling is hoping they can play with them
This fall Wahling will go the College of St. Mary’s in Omaha and major in nursing. AHSTW (2-6) visits Riverside (6-1) tonight, 7 pm first pitch, coverage on KSOM.
