
(Griswold, IA) — Class 1A District number two is stacked with track and field talent and it was on display on Thursday night as kids tried to qualify for next week’s state meet. Riverside would win the team competition; Gabe Funk won a close race in the 400 against Luke Sternberg with latter breaking another school record. The home team had some highlights but one big injury. The following is a team by team breakdown of the night:
Riverside Girls: Four wins for the Bulldogs that are guaranteed a trip to state. Sophia Fenner won the Shot Put (39-05.50); Kayden Schnack won the Long Jump (15-11.75); the 4×800 relay won at 10:12.90 with Bentley Rone, Ella Henderson, Schnack and Fenner. Arabella Singleton won the 100 meters (13.10 season PR).

Other top finishes for Riverside Girls included Sophia Taylor 2nd in the Shot Put (36-00, season PR); Madison Kelley 2nd in the Discus (107-05 season PR); Bentley Rone 2nd in the 400 Hurdles (1:08.09); Schnack was 2nd in the 200 (27.80); The 4×100, 4×200, 4×400, Distance Medley relays all finished 2nd and had strong times. The Shuttle Hurdle Relay was 3rd with a season PR of 1:12.63 and the Sprint Medley relay was 3rd with a season PR of 1:55.80.
Riverside Boys: Four relays got wins on Thursday night — the Sprint Medley (1:34.95 season PR) with Jaxon Gordon, Jett Rose, Cole Jeppesen and Maddox Knoke; the 4×100 (44.48) with Jeppesen, Rose, Aaron Smith and Knoke; the 4×40 (3:26.36 season PR) with Gordon, Keaten Rieken, Knoke, and Dawson Henderson; and the 4×800 (8:14.46) with Brody Henderson, Owen Fenner, Cruz Jaquez and Dawson Henderson. Dawson Henderson also won the 800 (1:59.38, season PR).

Griswold Girls: Carsyn Adams won the 400 Hurdles (season PR of 1:06.52) and finished 3rd in the 100 Hurdles with a season PR of 16.24. Adams was part of the Shuttle Hurdle team that finished 2nd but got a season PR of 1:07.96. Stanton won the Shuttle at 1:06.26.

Griswold Boys: Holden Jensen won the 3200 (10:13.39 season PR) and finished 2nd to Parker Heisterkamp of St. Albert in a fast race, 4:37.61 to 4:38.84 for Jensen which is a season PR. Connor Bowers won the High Jump (6-04).

Unfortunately for the Tigers, Peyton Cook pulled up in the middle of the 110 Hurdles holding a thigh muscle and had to scratch out of the 400 Hurdles. Cook is a key member of the Shuttle Hurdle relay that won earlier in the night with Wyatt Silk, Auden Wilson and Bode Wyman. Griswold posted a time of 1:00.25 which is a season PR.
Other scores for Griswold included a 2nd place finish in the Sprint Medley with a season PR of 1:35.63; RJ Dishong was 2nd in the discus (143-08); Cordy Dorscher was 2nd in the 400 Hurdles (55.78, season PR).

Lenox: The Girls Sprint Medley won with a PR of 1:53.92 and McKinzie Menefee won the 400 (1:00.98). On the boys side, Gabe Funk had three wins, he beat Luke Sternberg of AHSTW by .01 seconds in the 400 (49.09 to 49.10); won the 110 Hurdles (15.02) and 400 Hurdles (53.97) and anchored the Shuttle Hurdle relay and nearly caught Bode Wyman of Griswold on the last leg.

St. Albert: For the Falcons, Jadyn Beckman won the Shot Put (49-01.75) and Parker Heisterkamp won the 1600 (4:37.61). The Saintes 4×200 and 4×400 relays won. Lili Denton cruised to four wins on the night, winning the 800, 1500, 3000 and anchored the Distance Medley relay to a win.

AHSTW Girls: No wins for the Lady Vikes so they will hope for at large bids. Ava Paulsen was 2nd in the 800 (2:31.35); Loralei Wahling was 2nd in the 100 (13.50). The 4×800 team posted a strong time of 10:23.89.
AHSTW Boys: Luke Sternberg did not win the 400 but he broke his school record running at 42.10 finishing just behind Funk. Sternberg did make it to state in the 200 (22.53 equaling a season PR). Jett Peterson was 2nd in the shot put (47-04.50).

Southwest Valley Boys: Brody Crozier made it to state in two events, winning the Long Jump (20-07) and the 100 meters (11.35)

Exira EHK Boys: Austin Rasmussen was 5th in a very fast 1600 with a season PR of 4:51.76 and finished 3rd in the 3200 (11:02.44).
