(Glenwood) The ADM girls won the team title, Glenwood finished second, and Atlantic girls, third at the the Class 3A State qualifying COED Track and Field meet in Glenwood on Thursday. The ADM boy’s captured the team title, Des Moines Christian finished second, and Atlantic third. The top two in each event automatically qualified for the State Track Meet, and the next eight best times, distances, and heights across the state will earn a ticket as well.
ADM, the girl’s Class 3A defending Champions, dominated the meet with 13 automatic qualifiers out of 19 events. The Tigers won nine events, and finished second in four others, while piling up 173-points.
The Glenwood girl’s competed well, finishing second with 137 points, eight automatic qualifiers, two champions, and six second place finishes.
Atlantic, with four automatic qualifiers scored 89.5 points, led by Lila Wiederstein with automatic qualification in three events. The junior won the Long Jump with a leap of 17-08.50, 200 meters, 26.32, finished runner-up in the 100 meters, 12.57, and anchored the third place 4×100 meter relay team to a season best time of 49.70 with Van Aernam, Reed, Middents, and Wiederstein. This relay has a good chance of making an at-large bid. The Trojans Shuttle Relay team of Jones, Botos, Bruce, and Reed qualified second in 1:07.60, a new season best. Bishop, Heelan, scored 84.5 points, while qualifying in four events. Des Moines, Christian finished fifth with 70 points with two automatic qualifications. Lindsey Sonderman led the Cyclone with wins in the 3000, and 1500. Creston picked up a win from Cora Smith, 59.90 in the 400, and runner-up finish in the 4×800 meter relay.
On the boy’s side, ADM racked up 189 points. The Tigers posted 15 automatic qualifiers, nine champs, and six runners-up.
Des Moines, Christian finished second with 105.5 points. Caleb Ten Pas led the Lions with four gold medals. The junior anchored the winning 4×800 , and distance medley relays, won the 800 meters in 1:57.09, and topped the field in the 1600 in a time of 4.25.08. The Lions won four events, and finished second in four others, for a total of eight automatic tickets.
Ethan McNeal led Atlantic with two gold medals, and one silver. The junior won the 100 meters in 11.08, topped the field in the 400 meters in 50.66, and finished second in the 200 in 22.62. Other notable performances in the Discus, Xavier Darrow earned third place with a throw of 153-08.00, followed closely by Gavin McLaren, who finished fourth at 150-04.00. McLaren finished third in the Shot Put with a toss of 53-02.00. Darrow finished fifth with a person best throw of 50.00.50. The Shuttle team of Grant Petty, Jaxon Hepler, Zander Killion, and Shelton Mualia ran third in 1:01.32. The 4×400 meter relay team despite having a rough exchange, on the fourth leg of the race ran 3:29.64, well off their PR by about three seconds, still may have a chance. The quad included Tanner O’Brien, Preston Williams, Collin Rudy, and Grant Petty.
Glenwood finished fourth with 101 points. with one champ, and three runners-up.
Bishop, Heelan nailed down fifth place with eight automatics two champs, and six runners-up.
Harlan finished sixth with 52 points. They are standing by to see if they can land an at-large ticket to the state meet.
Creston finished seventh with 50 points, led by Tom Mikkelsen Shot Put victory, and Brayden Schoon second place finish in the Discus.
