(Griswold, IA) — Griswold is hosting a Class 1A state qualifying meet tonight, we’ll have coverage with results and interviews on KSOM.
The winners in each event will qualify automatically to the State Track meet and then 14 at large entries will be taken from the 10 total districts to fill out the field. That means even though you win, you still need the best score that you can get.
One of the most competitive events in Griswold will be the Shuttle Hurdle relay. The Tigers have the 2nd fastest time in Class 1A; Lenox is 5th and Riverside is 6th — that means two of those teams will have to qualify for state as an at large. Griswold Head Coach Andy Everett says everybody better be on their toes
Another fast race will be the 110 Hurdles — Gabe Funk of Lenox has the 4th fastest time in 1A at 14.74; Jaxon Gordon of Riverside is 8th at 14.91 and Peyton Cook of Griswold is 9th at 14.95. Riverside has the fastest time in the district in every relay but the shuttle. Coaches will have to make a decision on which 4 events each team member will compete in but Everett — who is a math teacher at Griswold — says it all comes down to the math
On the girls side, Lili Denton of St. Albert is the overwhelming favorite in the 800, 1500 and 3000. Riverside is the favorite in three relays — the 4×200, 4×400, and 4×800. The 100 Hurdles will be a fast race with four of the top 12 runners in Class 1A all in one district — Hannah Olson of Stanton is 3rd, Lauren Johnson of Stanton is 8th, Carsyn Adams of Griswold is 10th and Ayla Richardson of Riverside is 12th. Tigers Girls Track Head Coach Rachel Larson knows this could be the last track and field meet for many of these girls and wants them to do their best
Schools competing tonight in Griswold include AHSTW, Ar-We-Va, Bedford, East Mills, Essex, Exira EHK Boys, Griswold, Hamburg, Heartland Christian, Lenox, Riverside, Sidney, Southwest Valley, St. Albert and Stanton. Field events are at 4, running events start at 4:45, coverage on KSOM.
