(Des Moines) Angelina Ramirez will fill the open seat for Iowa’s 78th District. The Democratic nominee announced her victory in the special election last night, with unofficial poll numbers showing Ramirez won nearly 80 percent of the vote against Republican Bernie Hayes. Ramirez’s win helps Iowa House Democrats chip away at the Republican 67-to-33 supermajority.
“Tonight, the nonprofit co-founder and community leader Angel Ramirez won the election to represent House District 78. Her fit with the district, her character, her hard work, and the overwhelming support of Democrats who stepped up to help organize in Linn County made this possible,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart. “I’d like to thank Ramirez for her readiness to represent her constituents and to stand up for the rights and prosperity of all Iowans. The scale of our victory tonight shows that as long as Democrats run candidates who understand and fight for their communities, we can win elections across the state. There’s more work to be done, but tonight we can rest assured that things look brighter. We won this election in good shape. Tomorrow we get ready for the next.”
Meanwhile, U.S. Representative Ashley Hinson won’t make a run for Iowa governor next year. Hinson released a statement on Facebook, mentioning she will remain focused on her work in the nation’s capital. Hinson also noted her commitment to electing a conservative as the next Iowa governor.
