(Oakland, IA) — When you are a small school, you need all the help you can get in track and field. At Riverside, the numbers on the girls side are strong with Senior Veronica Shechinger one of the senior leaders. Schechinger specializes in the relays — she has run in all of them this season at one time or another except for the Shuttle Hurdle. She feels that the strongest is the 4×400 which has been cutting time as of late
Audio PlayerSchechinger says its not guaranteed that it will be the same four going forward — Riverside has a lot of options so Head Coach Jared Hoffman has some decisions to make before the state qualifying meet on May 15. Last year, Schechinger was running mostly middle distance but this year has run mostly sprints which is what she did in junior high school so her track experiences have kind of come full circle
Audio PlayerRight now, Riverside is ranked 5th in Class 1A in the 4×400, the 4×800, and the Distance Medley relay. Schechinger is involved in all three and she likes running in the relays because she likes the team aspect
Audio PlayerSchechinger is also dual sporting this spring playing soccer as well — she plays on defense but the sport is not a priority — when there is a conflict she is on the track. She hopes to be on the blue oval with the rest of her teammates and she might end up being in four different relays. In order to get on the medal stand, she says simply everybody has to run faster
Audio PlayerNext up for Riverside is the Lady Red Relays tonight at Missouri Valley.
