(Red Oak) The Nishnabotna Water Defenders celebrated Earth Day with a successful clean-up and water testing event at Dutton Park, along Red Oak Creek. Partnering with Coach Nordeen’s iJAG program from the Red Oak High School, the team welcomed over 40 enthusiastic students who spent the morning removing trash and debris from the creek and surrounding area.
With the sun shining and spring in full bloom, students not only made a visible impact on the environment but also learned firsthand about water pollution. They had the opportunity to test water samples for nitrate and pH levels, gaining insight into the health of the local watershed and the importance of monitoring water quality.
Community members and teachers also joined in, making this Earth Day a true team effort. Their support helped make the event both educational and impactful.
“We’re so proud of these students and grateful for everyone who came out,” said a spokesperson for the Nishnabotna Water Defenders. “It’s this kind of energy and commitment that inspires long-term care for our rivers and creeks.”
The group hopes this is just the beginning. “We encourage other communities in the Nishnabotna Watershed to host similar events,” they added. “If you’re interested in organizing a clean-up or water testing day, please reach out to us at nishnabotnawaterdefenders.org!”
For those wanting to take their water monitoring involvement a step further, individuals can join Nitrate Watch through the Izaak Walton League of America. It’s free, easy, and a powerful way to help protect local water sources.
