(Des Moines) State House District #23 Representative Ray Sorensen from Greenfield says Iowans have clarified that rising costs are at the top of their minds. Sorensen says they are doing everything possible to provide relief, and this week was a big step forward.
Sorensen noted that the legislature had already passed a 3.8% flat income tax rate for all Iowans, which would put more money back in everyone’s pocket.
Representative Sorensen says the House is working on additional bills to help lower costs:
- No income tax on overtime pay (HF 110): Rewarding those who put in the extra hours.
- No income tax on cash tips (HF 268): Up to $25,000 in tips tax-free for Iowans earning under $155,000.
- Sales tax relief is available on everyday items, HF 963 (laundry detergent), HF 964 (toilet paper), and HF 966 (dietary supplements).
- Adoption tax credit bump (HF 965): From $5,000 to $20,000—because cost shouldn’t stand between a child and a loving family.
- Expanded childcare credit (HF 962): No more income limits to qualify.
These bills just passed the Ways and Means Committee, and the next stop is the House floor.
