(Madison County, IA) — The Madison County Treasurer could be removed from her position. The county attorney’s office filed a petition to remove Amanda DeVos for allegedly failing to perform her duties and engaging in willful misconduct. DeVos was also accused of mishandling county funds and currently faces criminal charges after being accused of falsifying vehicle registration and property tax documents. Despite an interim treasurer being appointed, DeVos has received her salary and benefits since being charged.
In early February, the City of Winterset says it was not to blame for ending up with a quarter-of-a-million dollars that was supposed to go to the Cities of West Des Moines and Patterson. The Winterset City Administrator says Madison County deposited the money in Winterset’s City account by mistake, but the County has not taken the money back despite Winterset’s requests. Subsequently, Madison County Treasurer Amanda DeVos was arrested, charged with mismanagement, tampering with records, and fraud.
