(Atlantic) After more than 25 years of hosting a traditional Relay for Life event, the Cass County Relay for Life committee is embracing a new format in 2025. Event organizers announced the shift will allow the Relay team to have a presence at various events throughout the county this year, aiming to expand their reach and impact.
The first of these events, “Spring into Relay,” is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Heritage House in Atlantic. This social gathering is open to the public and will feature cake and punch, a bake sale, gospel music, and a special slideshow honoring local cancer survivors and loved ones lost to cancer. A $10 suggested donation is requested for entry, which will help support the American Cancer Society’s mission.
Cass County Relay for Life Chair Carole Schuler said the decision to step away from the traditional Relay walk was not taken lightly but came from a desire to engage with the community in new ways.
“We continue to strive to support those battling cancer in our region and we felt it was time for a change from the traditional event,” Schuler said. “We hope to reach more segments of the community to boost our outreach and fundraising.”
The program will include up-to-date cancer-related information and statistics, as well as time for companionship and connection. A highlight of the afternoon will be a gospel music performance by Kris and Dave Ferry, a local couple married nearly 50 years. Dave, a longtime musician, said the event is particularly meaningful as his wife Kris is currently battling cancer.
“I love sharing music with others any chance I get,” Dave said. “And this event means even more because of what Kris is going through.”
Those wishing to honor a loved one in the slideshow can submit a photo and short description to chparks@gmail.com or ddmarnin@yahoo.com. A $10 suggested donation includes both the slideshow submission and admission to the event.
Community members are encouraged to support the Relay team “Walking to Cure” by donating online at www.relayforlife.org/casscountyia. For updates on this and future events, join the Relay for Life of Cass County Facebook group.
The committee hopes to see many cancer survivors, caregivers, and supporters on April 26 for a heartfelt afternoon of remembrance, celebration, and connection. Additional events are planned throughout the year as part of the committee’s new approach to community outreach and fundraising.
