(Storm Lake) The National Weather Service based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, reports that wind gusts exceeding 80 miles per hour caused extensive damage in Storm Lake early this morning. Todd Heitkamp, the lead meteorologist at the Sioux Falls office, informed KSOM-KS95 News that strong straight-line winds were responsible for the destruction.
Audio PlayerThe Storm Lake Police Department has posted aftermath images on their Facebook page. Fallen power lines, downed trees, and scattered debris obstruct roads throughout the town.
Audio PlayerHeitkamp noted that the storm persisted for quite a while, affecting nearby regions with winds of 50 to 60 mph, but the most significant damage occurred in Storm Lake.
