(Southwest Iowa) Severe storms swept across southwest Iowa on Thursday evening, bringing high winds, hail, and confirmed tornadoes to various areas in the region.
The National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, Nebraska, reported that tornadoes were confirmed approximately five miles southwest of Randolph in Fremont County around 8:27 p.m. Another tornado damaged outbuildings, trees, and power poles four miles west of Essex, with hail reported measuring 2.75 inches. Additionally, a possible tornado was reported around 8:32 p.m., located six miles southeast of Oakland.
The storm advanced into Page County, with an 85-mile-per-hour wind gust recorded at 9:04 p.m., just five miles southeast of Coburg. This significant storm continued to impact Adams, Taylor, and Union Counties. At 9:53 p.m., Corning experienced hail measuring one inch. Lenox recorded a wind gust of 61 mph at 10:08 p.m., followed by a 76 mph gust reported five miles east of Lenox at 10:21 p.m.
In Union County, the storm damaged farm buildings and trees near Kent and uprooted six power poles between 2600 and 2700.
Earlier that evening, hail measuring 1.00 inches was noted in Lewis, located in Cass County. In Pottawattamie County, four-inch hail fell two miles northwest of McClelland. Near Hancock, 1.75 inches of hail was reported, and 2.75 inches was recorded four miles southwest of Underwood.
