(Sioux City, IA) — On Atlantic Sports Saturday on KS 95, Atlantic Girls Track and Field Head Coach Matt Mullenix said he was excited to see what Lila Weiderstein would accomplish in the Long Jump when she did not have to worry about running to other events. She had the opportunity to focus on jumping and she did not disappoint. Wiederstein leaped 18-02 1/2 on her 5th overall attempt and that was good enough to take home first place at the Sioux City Relays and set a new meet record in the process.
Wiederstein’s best this season was 17-02 which ranked 21st in the state which put her on the bubble for the Drake Relays. On her first jump Saturday, she exceeded it at 17-03.75. Her next two jumps were not as good but Wiederstein was in the finals. On her 4th jump, she only went 16-08.50 but something clicked on her 5th jump and vaulted into first place. Her last jump was solid at 17-05. With 18-02.50, she went from 21st in the state to 5th. It passes the blue oval standard of 17-10 which puts her into the Drake Relays field automatically. Also, she is closing in on the Atlantic school record which is 18-06.50.
After her jumps, Wiederstein did get on the track and anchored the 4×100 relay to a season best time of 51.12 seconds with Stellah Van Aernam, Jayci Reed and Allison Middents. The school record is 49.99 which was set last year at the state tournament. The new time puts Atlantic within in the top 40 in the state.
Also for the Trojans, Jayci Reed finished 2nd in the 100 Hurdles in Class B at 16.51 and qualified her into the elite finals where she finished 6th place at 16.62. Stellah Van Arenam finished 5th in the 100 and Allison Middents was 6th in the 100.
Glenwood also came to Sioux City and the girls won the 4×00 relay with Megan Hubel, Caitlin Hebel, Breckyn Petersen, and Brooklyn Schultz at 4:09.95. Grace Berglund was 2nd in the 3000 and 4th in the 1600. Petersen was 3rd in the 400 Hurdles. Haylee Hughes was 4th in the 400. The Rams were 2nd in the sprint medley, 4×800 and shuttle hurdle relays.
Clarinda was at the Olsen Stadium and Jerzee Knight made it the Elite 100 meters finals and finished in 3rd place after winning the Class B race at 12.31 seconds.
