(Sioux City, IA) — There was some amazing competition at the Sioux City Relays with close finishes in the 100 meter dash and long jump. Ethan McNeal of Atlantic won the Class B 100 meter dash at 11.19 seconds which was a new season PR by .02 second but it didn’t last long. McNeal’s time was the same as Quintin Pollard of Sioux City East in the Class A final setting up a dual in the Elite finals. It was a close finish with Pollard edging McNeal by one one hundreth of a second — 10.96 to 10.97. For McNeal, he cracks the 11 second barrier and goes into the top 20 in the state which puts him in position to make it to the Drake Relays which takes the top 32 for the 100.
The other great dual on Saturday’s meet was in the boys long jump — on his third attemp, Albear Van Zee of MOC Floyd Valley set a new meet record at 22-04.25 which put him into first place. The record did not last long. Chris Ford of Sioux City East made it to the finals and went 21-07.50 and 21-06.75 in the finals but on his third and final attempt, Ford cleared 22-09.25 which passed Van Zee and took the new meet record. Van Zee fouled in his last two attempts.
Elsewhere for Atlantic, the Trojans improved on their time in the 4×100. They finished 4th but posted a time of 44.06 which is an improvement by .82 seconds. Ashton Rutherford, Zander Killion, Jarrett Hansen, and Ethan McNeal pushed their ranking in the state from 102nd to just outside the top 50 and should be good enough to qualify for the Drake Relays. Gavin McLaren finished 5th in the shot put at 51-07.50 and Xavier Darrow was 8th in the shot put at 49-07.50 which is a new season PR. Darrow was 5th in the discus at 154-02 which is also a season PR. Shelton Mualia finished 5th in the 110 Hurdles ata 15.95.
Clarinda’s Distance Medley relay had a big day by setting a new meet record at 3:35.87 with Nolan Wyman, Kayden Hawley, Cooper Phillips and Kyle Wagoner. The time will put the Cardinals in the top 15 in the state. The 4×100 team won at 43.36 with Wyman, Phillips, Hawley, and Kaiden Roop. Clarinda had been tied for 118th coming into the meet at 45.19 and went to the top 20 with their new time.
Glenwood won the 4×200 relay with Jackson Mulikins, Keaton German, Drew Schroeder and Victor Cruz at 1:32.05. The Rams were also 2nd in the 4×100 relay at 43.79 seconds which is a slight improvement from 43.84.
