(Avoca) Regional Water’s Board of Directors has issued a continued reminder to customers on its ATP System that the area remains under Alert Level Yellow, the second-highest stage of its Emergency Water Conservation Plan. This status does not apply to the Underwood, McClelland, or Weston areas.
With water usage rising and wellfield levels falling below last year’s marks, General Manager Tom Kallman warned of potential consequences if immediate conservation doesn’t take place.
“Usage is up, but the water levels in our wellfield are below last year’s levels, and we haven’t even gotten through the Spring yet,” Kallman said. “We will not be able to provide water for our customers’ needs this Summer if we don’t conserve immediately. The result will be the rationing of water, something we have never had to do here.”
The advisory includes mandatory nonessential water restrictions across all sectors—agricultural, commercial, industrial, municipal, and residential. Key measures include:
-Large water users should explore alternative sources, such as Council Bluffs Water Works and non-potable options.
-Outdoor watering should only occur between 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM, and only when absolutely necessary.
-Residents are encouraged to use private wells if available.
-Commercial users should conduct water usage audits and cut back accordingly.
-All users should inspect for plumbing leaks and install water-saving devices.
-Households are urged to reduce shower and bath water usage and only run full loads of laundry and dishes.
