(Griswold, IA) — Connor Bowers of Griswold is making some noise in the High Jump this year. Coming into his Senior season, Bowers had never jumped better than 5 foot 6 inches but last week he went past that number by almost a foot. On Tuesday at Bedford, he got 5 feet 10 and then in his home meet on Thursday he jumped 6 foot 3 a new PR which put him tied for 18th in the state in possibly in position to compete at the Drake Relays. He says he got 6 foot 3 on the 2nd try on Tuesday but he actually struggled with a lower height earlier
Bowers credits the coaching staff for making him better quickly and he says he started jumping because of basketball
Bowers also has been anchoring some Griswold relays. The Distance Medley team won their own relays last Thursday but Bowers says the main focus is the 4×400
Bowers now has a goal of making to the Drake Relays in the high jump and going to state. He loves football the most but this track and field thing is growing on him
Bowers is a senior who plans on enlisting in the Army once he turns 18 this July and wants eventually to go to college and become a DNR officer. Griswold will next compete at Lenox tomorrow night.
