(Indianola, IA) — There are seven athletes from the area including three from Atlantic that are on the Simpson College track and field team. The Storm finished their indoor season on February 28 at the ARC Indoor Championships and on March 28, Simpson had its first outdoor meet in Pella at the Central Invitational. Their next meet is this Saturday, April 5 at Wartburg. Here are the alums and some of their highlights:
Drew Engler, Junior, Atlantic
Engler runs in the long distance events. In the indoor championship, he finished 16th in the 3000 with a a time of 9:02.14. He was also 19th in the 5000 with a time of 15:54.27. In the first outdoor meet, Engler finished 12th in the 1500 with a time of 4:18.92. Engler is a 2022 graduate of Atlantic and is currently majoring in Biology. He was an All-Academic selection in 2024 for the Storm
Alex Sonntag, Freshman, Atlantic
Sonntag finished in 15th place in the 800 in the indoor meet running a time of 2:01.45. He graduated from Atlantic just last year and was a four time state track and field qualifier for the Trojans. Sonntag is majoring in Health & Exercise Science.
Bennett Whetstone, Freshman, Atlantic
Whetstone competes in distance races for Simpson and in the last indoor meet of 2024, he finished in 5th place in the 600 meters with a time of 1:33.54.
Brenden Godbout, Senior, Glenwood
In the indoor championship, Godbout placed eighth overall in the 60m hurdles, and his time 8.41 in the prelims puts him ninth in school history. He was also part of the 4×400 relay team that was 4th. He finished 4th in the 110 Hurdles in the first outdoor meet with a time of 15.08 and won the 400 hurdles at 56.04. Godbout is a two time all conference performer and four time letterwinner. He is majoring in sports administration with minors in marketing and coaching.
Doug Berg, Sophomore, Nodaway Valley
Berg was 12th in the 1 Mile at the indoor championships, running a time of 4:26.90. In the first outdoor meet, Berg was 30th in the 800 and 11th in the 1500. Last year as a freshman, he ran his best 1,500 meter time in a time of 4:17.63 at the Wartburg Triangular. Berg graduated from Nodaway Valley in 2023 and was the state runner up in cross country in 2019 for the Wolverines. He is majoring in management and minoring in marketing.
Jeret Petersen, Freshman, Earlham
Petersen competed in the Heptathlon in the Indoor meet and finished in 9th place overall. His best individual event was the 60 M Hurdles in which he was third — he was 8th in the high jump and pole vault, 10th in the long jump and shot put, and 10th in the long jump and 1000. In the outdoor meet, Petersen finished 15th in the 110 Hurdles and 21st in the javelin. He is majoring in computer science with a minor in business analytics.
Brandon Bowen, Freshman, CBTJ
In the indoor meet, Bowen was 15th in the 60 Hurdles. He is double majoring in political science and business management.
