(Avoca, IA) — The AHSTW Girls Soccer team opened their season last night with a 3-1 loss to East Sac County. Wins have been hard to come by for this team with just five wins in the last five seasons.
The Lady Vikes are looking to improve off last year’s 2-12 team but only lose two seniors. As a Sophomore, Halle Goodman led the team in scoring with 9 goals, 2 assists and 20 points. She is back this year and Head Coach Beth Herbst says she is a very offensive minded player who is always looking to score
In goal, AHSTW loses last year’s keeper Saydi Paulsen to graduation but have a couple of different options. Freshman Jayden Looper has shown a lot of potential says Herbst but Sophomore Annabel Baxter has more experience so she will start the season in the net if she’s well
The Lady Vikes also return Junior Claire Mertz who had 5 total points last year — Mertz and Goodman will get most of their points from the midfield position. Overall, Herbst likes her offense — and she likes her defense. She says they must overcame some lack of numbers and to do that is to play together
Next up for AHSTW is a visit to Des Moines to face Grand View Christian on Thursday night.
